War Is Madness

‘War is madness’ is a maze of screens. Each screen - almost - starts as a long canvas frottage of a seashore and objects created by the sea and deposited there. The frottages are crafted using materials found locally (i.e. peat, sand, soil, nets seaweed etc). The canvas is then cut into parts; these are stretched on frames and developed in the studio, guided by imaginations of war episodes pertinent to the location. The screens are combined into a maze; this maze is growing since the project is open-ended

Westray 1 - 2000-2001, 3 panels, 150 by 75 cm each, mixed media (acrylics, sand, radiator gloss, yacht varnish).

The three canvases were spread on the shore on the island of Westray in Orkney, not far from the airfield on the north of the island looking out to Papa Westray. It was a clear day with showers and changing breeze. I pressed three canvasses into the shore - the broad flat slabs of grey rock. I also placed rocks on the canvasses as masks. I used diluted acrylics, black radiator paint and local materials – the soil, the sand and sea weed. And I used the wind as a paint brush and the rain as a sponge letting the elements do the work.

Lewis 1 - 2002-2003, 3 panels, 150 x 180 cm each; mixed media (local sand, and soil, acrylics, wood glue, red oxide earth, yacht varnish).

Port Mhór Bhràgair beach by Ciabost on Lewis is an extraordinary place. Delimited by cliffs to the west and to the east, it is rocky and wild. The east side is covered in round coloured stripy rocks but those grey with narrow white lines prevail. The beach is covered in debris of man made objects, worn almost out of recognition and congealed into puzzling objects. The dark sea is making collages out of the jetsam.
